The 588th Night Bomber Regiment was founded in 1941 by Marina Raskova, a legendary aviatrix sometimes called the Soviet Amelia Earhart. Composed entirely of women, the 588th flew obsolete Polikarpov Po-2 trainer aircraft made out of plywood and canvas. They loaded these unarmored open-cockpit biplanes with payloads of just two bombs and took them on dangerous harassment missions behind enemy lines, flying up to 18 times every night for the rest of World War II.

The pilots of the 588th would idle their engines and glide when approaching their target, creating a soft whooshing sound the Germans compared to a broomstick - hence the nickname "Nachthexen" or Night Witches. This term was adopted by the Soviet women themselves as a badge of honor. The Night Witches were so effective, so elusive, and so feared that any German who shot down a Po-2 was guaranteed an Iron Cross.
